We were in for a big treat on Sunday when we arrived in Santa Fe., New Mexico. Santa Fe is a beautiful City. Even in late afternoon, the heat on the streets was stifling. We stayed overnight, and in the morning Maury drove us to Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The base was their home for over 2 years in his past Air Force career. It was named for Col. Roy C. Kirkland, who was the former Commanding Officer at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, until his death in 1941.
It was mid-afternoon Monday and quite warm when we arrived in Juarez, Mexico; however, we spent our time shopping and bargaining for souvenirs. Our son, Maury, drove across the border into El Paso, Texas, where he installed an air conditioning unit in the camper. This had been a long, hot, tiring day, but ultimately we had “instant cool.”
Just before dark, Tuesday, July 1, we came in sight of the small community of Boyd, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Fairbetter, our daughter-in-law’s parents, were expecting us. It was a delight to receive their warm hospitality. Their home was supremely functional, not only for visitors, but for the owners. Thursday our goal was the trip to the famous City of Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Hattie Jackson had as her dinner guests Sunday Pete Jackson and J. MacQueen of Washington, D.C. Her guests on Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clark of Rochester, N. Y., Miss Lilia Clark of Flint Hill and Miss Maude Clark of Pittsburgh, Pa. Mrs. Hattie Jackson, Freddie and Lillard Jackson and Miss Hattie Elizabeth Jackson were Sunday evening of James Rector at Boston.
