U. S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Addison L. Swindler Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Swindler Sr., Sperryville, Va., is one of the first recipients of the nation’s newest noncombatant military award for outstanding service to the United States, the Meritorious Service Medal.
Sergeant Swindler, assigned at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, was cited for his outstanding performance as chief of the air target materials branch at Hickam. His outstanding professional knowledge and initiative aided immeasurably in the performance of his duties.
The new bronze medal, authorized by former President Johnson early in January, honors those who distinguish themselves through outstanding achievement or service. The award ranks between the Legion of Merit and the Commendation Medal and is equivalent to the Bronze Star for combat.
The sergeant, a veteran of the Korean War, is a graduate of Sperryville High School. He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and the University of Hawaii. His wife, Joan, is the daughter of Mrs. Netus Brown of Sperryville.
