vicinity. The single most popular attraction in Colorado is the United States Air Force Academy, where last year more than a million visitors flocked during the tourist season. The Academy, scaled to fit the Space Age, occupies part of an 18,000-acre tract and is surrounded by 100 miles of road.
One day we drove to the foot of Cheyenne Mountain to the Broadmoor, one of Colorado’s most distinguished institutions. The Broadmoor is a resort hotel sprawled over 5,000 acres and last February was the site of the 1969 World Figure Skating Championships.
Colorado averages more than 6,000 feet above sea level and many of its peaks top 14,000 feet. Its rivers supply water to 19 other states. Gold and silver built the Colorado Territory into a booming state. The fact of the altitude of Colorado impressed itself on us from the first night there.
We drove out of the town of Colorado Springs early Saturday morning and headed for the mile-high City of Denver. Here the sun shines an average of 300 days a year and even though the natives sometimes complain of the sunshine, the weather is one of the greatest things they have going for them.
We had a last glance along the streets of Denver, an clean, handsome area sometimes referred to as the Picture Window on the Rockies, and then proceeded to Denver Stapelton Airport, where we departed for Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
The month’s vacation in the West, and South into Texas leaves us with fond memories, but it is good to be home in Rappahannock County.
