Richmond, Va. . . . John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, noted today that the two holiday weekends this summer saw 46 Virginia traffic deaths and that of last year’s Labor Day weekend toll of 24 is repeated, deaths for the three weekends will total just two less than were experienced during the entire month of March this year. "A glance at the official reports,” Mr. Hanna said, “shows repetition of driving while drinking, driving while exhausted and driving too fast.”
He urged that weekend drivers realize that any summer weekend presents far more dangers than usual. There may be more drinking, drivers are often tired or sleepy, there is too much hurrying and speeding and much driving is done at night when the mileage death rate is nearly three times higher than that of daylight.
Mr. Hanna suggested that returning motorists start back early so there will be no temptation to hurry and that they be in good physical condition.
“All too often,’’ he pointed out, “some persons on a weekend holiday drink more than usual, take more exercise and gat leas sleep. Such motorists may stay where they are as long as possible and then start home tired or sleepy, in a hurry and after dark.**
Hie 3-day holiday last year saw 915 deaths throughout the nation.
