RAPP CHATS

The weeding committee for the Rappahannock Angus Feeder Calf Sale has just wound up its annual inspection tour. Total number of calves consigned to the October 14 sale - 1537 head. By the time pink eye victims are left at home and the graders cull out the VEM cats, guess the final tally left to run through the sale ring will be a shade over 1400. Could be the largest sale we have had.

Generally, the calves look good. Good size for age. Majority of producers are alert to changing demands. They have been culling out the small, dumpy, compact cows and trying to use the type of bull that will stretch the calves out and up.

Besides picking apples, filling silos and treating calves for pink eye - this is the time of year to seed pastures and hay fields; order barley and wheat seed, and fertilize the front lawn.

Recommended Small Grain Varieties: Winter Oats: Norline; Lee

Barley: Pennrod; Wong; Jefferson

Wheat: Blueboy - the new wonder wheat, if you are prepared to make a heavy top dressing of nitrogen next spring, if not try Redcoat.

If you are interested in sprucing up the bluegrass lawn, September is the ideal month for reseeding
