The shrubs and small trees you plant to supply food may also provide shelter from the hot sun in summer and cold winds of winter. Locate them in a back corner of the property away from traffic and excessive noise. Include some evergreens which will be more effective as a windbreak.
Trees will serve as nesting sites, but you may increase the appeal of your yard as a bird haven by installing some bird houses. Be sure you select the correct type to attract the species you prefer, and which are commonly found in your area.
Your birds will also need nesting materials to construct or
line their homes. They will welcome a supply of short pieces of old thread or rags. Do not provide tough fibers like nylon in which birds may become entangled. A supply of mud which is high in clay will attract robins, and other birds that use mud in building their nests.
Be sure the feeders and nesting boxes are located where they cannot be reached by cats. A
