Gov. Godwin Notes

Nat. Highway Week

“Rarely has Virginia realized more clearly the importance of highways than during the devastating floods of late August,” Governor Mills E. Godwin Jr. said in a statement noting the state’s observance of National Highway Week September 21-17.

The Governor’s statement notes that for days after the backlash of Hurricane Camille struck the Old Dominion, “entire communities were isolated, commerce and industry halted and assistance tc those in distress severely handicapped.

“These events reminded us again that highways are the lifelines of the Commonwealth, carrying her commerce and her people, and sustaining a myriad of industries and businesses of every kind.”

Tax Information

James P. Boyle, IRS District Director for Virginia, said today that individuals paying estimated income tax must reflect the extension of the 10 per cent surcharge to December 31, 1969, in their installments due on or after September 15.

Prior to the extension, the 10 per cent surchage was to expire June 30, 1969, which resulted in an annual effective rate of 5 per cent for 1969. Since the extension raises the effective rate to the full 10 per cent, estimated taxes will have to be recomputed, with the additional tax to be divided equally over the remaining installments.

Taxpayers can recompute the installments due on the Amended Computation schedule they received as part of their estimated tax package last February.
