Student Dropouts on
Decrease in Va.
This State Department of Education said today 17,120 students dropped out of Virginia’s public high schools during 1968-69, a decrease of 1,229 below the figute for the previous school year.
The number of 1968-69 dropouts in grades eight through 12 was 4.5 percent of the total secondary school enrollment of 376,855. This was the lowest percentage recorded since the Department began collecting dropout statistics in 1961-62, when the rate was 5.5 percent. During 1967-68, 18,349 students
5.1 percent for the total enrollment of 362,390 - dropped out of high schools in the State. The data on dropouts were compiled by the Division of Educational Research and Statistics from reports submitted by local school divisions.
