Action of the enzymes is specific - that is, they act only on the soil, not on the fabric. Ordinary bleaches remove or discolorize stains, but their action is not specific; bleaches act on the fabric, as well as the soil and stains.
These new products which call for pre-soaking before the regular wash cycle take into consideration the fact that enzymes act slowly. Because they need time to do their job, the soak should be at least 30 minutes long and may be as long as overnight. Except for fresh protein soils, the water should be hot (not over 150 degrees F.); for fresh protein soils, lukewarm water is better because it does not tend to set the soil while the enzymes are trying to remove it.
Soaking can be done in the laundry tub, the sink, a bucket, or the washing machine. At the end of the soak, the water should be extracted from the clothes and the clothes given a regular wash in
