Social Security can pay $50,000 or more in benefits to the family of a younger worker if he dies or becomes severely disabled before his children are grown. Social Security District Manager, Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, disclosing the figures today, said she doubted that one in ten Americans realized how much protection social security provides young families in the form of disability and survivors’ insurance. In fact, social security is so much a protective umbrella for the young that one out of eight people who receive social security benefits each month is under 18. The number of children getting social security checks, she noted, has increased from 54,648 when the cash benefits started 29 years ago to over 3 million at present.
