BLACKSBURG-Even though ;ree planting has become the nost widely-known woodlands nanagement practice in Virginia, there are still thousands of acres which could be profitably turned to the production of trees. “There is no better way to get some of those acres started in trees than to plant trees, as opposed to planting tree seeds,’’ said C. E. Gill, extension specialist in forest management at Virginia Tech. “And, there is no better way to get them into profitable timber production than to thin the tree stand when it needs it. While all the planting has gone on, many Virginia timber stands have been neglected as far as thinning is concerned,” he added.
Now is the time to thin oul those neglected stands, both ir pine plantations and young hardwood stands. There is rea cash value for so doing. Thinning makes room and promotes growth on the better trees whili speeding maturity.
Bigger and better quality log: come out of stands properh thinned at the proper time. And being less expensive to log am mill, they bring higher prices.
