Opening the Festival program, the morning of April 30, will be the Apple Pie Baking contest for high school girls of the Appalachian apple-growing region. At noon that day, the Ladies’ luncheon and the Stag luncheon will be held. At 2:30 p.m., the coronation of Miss Merie-EUen Fong,' Queen Shenandoah 43rd-elect, will be held at the Handley Bowl. Miss Fong is the daughter of U. S. Sen. and Mrs. Hiram Fong, of Hawaii. She is a student at Goucher College, Baltimore. Virginia’s governor, the Hon. Linwood Holton, will crown the Queen. Senator Fong will have a role in the coronation ceremony as “Minister of State”.
The colorful Pageant of Springtime, “Love Makes the World Go ’’Round”, with more than 1400 persons in the cast, will follow the coronation. Students from 13 schools, seven dance studios and four majorette groups in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia will participate in the production which is being directed by Mrs. George W. Clowser, Jr., of the Festival Headquarters staff.
The Advendo Band from Sneek, Holland, now visiting the United States, will have a special number in the outdoor spectacle. (The Pageant will be repeated on Friday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m.)
