The House of Delegates and the Senate have completed the congressional redistricting. Under the plan, Fauquier, Rappahannock and Warren will be included in the new 7th congressional district. This district will run from Ferderick through Rockingham over to Hanover and will contain almost 470,000 people.
The reapportionment for both the House and Senate has been completed by both Houses. Under these plans, Fauquier, Rappahannock and Warren are included in the same House district with Clarke, Frederick, Winchester. There will be two delegates elected for this district. The Senate district will include these same counties plus Shenandoah. All plans must be approved by the United States Attorney General and may be subjected to court action.
The House passed a resolution calling for a change in the ccrstitution to permit 18 year o’ds to vote in State elections. Under Federal law they may vote in Federal elections at the present time. This proposed change in the constitution must be approved again by the 1972 General Assembly and then must be approved by the voters in a referendum.
The bill which authotfzes localities to assess agricultural, horticultural, forest and open space land based on its use rather than its fair market value has been passed by both the House and Senate and now awaits approval by the Governor. This law does not make it mandatory that this type of taxation be adopted by the localities btit merely permits them to do so if they so desire.
