Cemetery, Culpeper
Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson has introduced in Congress a bill to expand Culpeper National Cemetery by federal acquisition of approximately 60 acres of adjacent land. Similar bills offered in the past have not received action, and the 7th District Congressman acknowledged that, “prospects are not favorable, because of a reluctance in recent years to embark on a policy of nationwide expansion of the national cemetery system.” “I do believe the effort should be continued, however, in order that the traditional privilege of burial in a national cemetery might be preserved for veterans who have given honorable service to their country in time of war or other national emergency,” Robinson said. He noted that Culpeper National Cemetery is one of the few in the nation with remaining space, which is being exhausted rapidly because of the limitations imposed in recent years on eligibility for burial in Arlington National Cemetery. r. j
Robinson recalled that * the House Committee on Veterans Affairs held hearings last fall on a number of national cemetery bills, including one for the enlargement of the Culpeper cemetery, but none was reported, and all expired with the adjournment of the 91st Congress.
Rep. Robinson has also joined in introducing a bill to exempt .22 caliber ammunition from recordkeeping requirements of the federal firearms law.
“The inclusion of this ammunition among items on which special sale records must be kept has no reasonable relationship to crime control, and has imposed a needless nuisance on legitimate dealers and sportsmen,” the 7th District Congressman commented.
