as it spread through the upper South, the Atlantic Northeast and other areas where American chestnuts grew.
“The fungus-induced death of the trees took time. But the specie was so completely wiped out that by 1940, almost 100 per cent of the American chestnut commercial value had disappeared,” said Skelly.
“It has been estimated that loss of the specie has caused a 50 per cent reduction in the overall value of Eastern hardwood timber stands,” said Skelly.
The fungus still contaminates the area once covered by American chestnuts. It lives on chestnut sprouts still finding their way above ground from long-buried roots. Once the sprouts become infected, they die off in a few years.
The fungus induces a canker on the bark of the tree. The canker eventually girdles the stem or branch with subsequent wilting and death of the part of the tree above the canker.
Said Skelly, “Control of the chestnut blight was, and still is, virtually impossible. The American chestnut lacks resistance to the fungus. Oak chinkapin, red maple, hickory and sumac are mildly susceptible and provide a haven for the causative spores. The fungus spores, with over 100 million of them in each of the countless fruiting structures on an infected tree, are too numerous.”
