Under the U. S. Highway Safety Act of 1966, states and their political subdivisions are eligible to receive federal matching funds on a 50-50 matching basis for acceptable projects in the various fields of highway safety promotion. In Virginia, projects are submitted to the Governor through the Highway Safety Division and then forwarded to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for final approval. However, the Federal Government recognizes that DMV has already expended more than matching funds in this connection and is supplying the $95,730.00 without further requirements.
During the past fiscal year, the State and various of its political subdivisions received a total of $1,468,763.83 in such funds.
