Versatile Hardwood The American chestnut tree was one of America’s most versatile hard woods. From it came long-lasting lumber, rails for fencing, tannin for tanning, slow-burning firewood and plentiful supplies of nutritious nuts. But Endothia parasitica spelled its end. According to John M. Skelly, Virginia Tech extension specialist in -forest plant pathology, chestnut blight caused by the Endothia parasitica was first noticed in the New York Zoo in 1904. So rapid was its spread, transmitted by migratory birds, rain-splashed water, insects, the wind and practically any other agent that can move from tree to tree, the disease was first observed in Virginia in 1908. By 1910, the ailment had spread throughout the entire American chestnut tree range. Killing every susceptible chestnut in its way, the blight made its way through millions of the trees ANSWERS 1.
