Lions Prepare for

Eye Bank Week

This week, several thousand members of Lions Clubs throughout the state are completing plans for next week’s observance of Eye Bank. Week. By proclamation, Governor Linwood Holton has set aside the week starting March 7 for observance as Eye Bank Week, a reminder to Virginians of the sight-restoration work of the Lions-sponsored Old Dominion Eye Bank.

Over 200 Lions Clubs will take part in the observance by soliciting eye-donor pledge from their fellow citizens. In many areas, Lions members will take to the streets, canvass neighborhoods, and set up displays in stores and public places in the effort to persuade Virginians to pledge their eyes, on death, for use in corneal transplant operations.

The need for human eye tissue for this purpose, Old Dominion Eye Bank officials state, is much greater than the supply. It is estimated that the number of prospective eye donors on file must be doubled in order to assure the availability of tissue for all needed transplants.

Those wishing to donate their eyes, on death, for this purpose, may get pledge cards from members of local Lions Clubs or from Old Dominion Eye Bank, Richmond Eye Hospital, Richmond, Va. 23219.
