Department of Agriculture under which farmers and the Government share costs of conservation, pollution-abatement, and other environmental improvement practices needed in the public interest.

In general, costs are shared on a fifty-fifty basis. For forestry practices the Government may assume as much as 80 or 90 percent of the cost because of the national need for such practices and the long period which elapses before a woodland operator begins to harvest his trees.
