This is the time of year that we think of freedom. Ah, there is a good word. Freedom to choose, freedom to do this or that; but suppose you choose something that belongs to someone who has a prior claim to that ‘something’ you have set your heart upon. What are you going to do then, old buddy? Guess you had just better make a second choice. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave; but you had better not count on being free to do some things. That is, most of us; some get by with murder. Well, what does it matter if our environment is littered, our streams and air polluted? Why doesn’t someone come along who is BRAVE enough to do something about it?

Freedom to choose. Old Saint Paul said (in effect); “I choose Jesus, I count a privilege to be a slave to Him.” Now don’t use that word slave too loosely. I guess it depends on who is your master. Some seem to count it a privilege to be a slave to Miss Nicotine, Demon Run, or maybe some other master. There was once a saying, ‘it is better to be an old man’s darling than a young man’s slave’ so, it seems that we might even be slaves to cupid.

But let us think about vacation. It is a good thing, this being able to sort of pull up stakes and drift for awhile. One thing that makes vacations a thing of dread is, some do not return from them. Have you ever heard the song ‘when 1 take my vacation in heaven’? If we do not return I hope our vacation will be in that happy place. I asked a friend to pray for our return.

If I am free to choose, I choose to come back to my almost heaven; right here at home. And if perchance I do not, thank you for being such good people, for being friendly, tolerant, and maybe even loving me a little.
