Word occasionally trinkles in from across the county line that it is profitable to fertilize Alfalfa and high percentage red clover stands with 50 to 100 pounds of Nitrogen per acre. Don’t you believe it. Years upon years of research from all over the U. S. shows that the amount of nitrogen produced by the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the roots of these legumes decreases in direct relationship to the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied. The following results were obtained cm test plots at Purdue: Yields remained approximately the same where 300 pounds of Nitrogen per acre was applied on Alfalfa for three consecutive years when compared to plots that received no nitrogen fertilizer.
