Traffic Deaths
Down First Half
Richmond, Va. -- The 541 Virginia traffic deaths for the first six months of 1971 so far reported mark a decrease of 21 from those of 1970’s comparable period, Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, reported today. Noting the improvement was achieved in the face of a rise of about 5.4 percent in traffic volumes, Colonel Burgess said the 1971 figure is subject to slight upward revision due to deaths of persons now carried as injured and late reports. He said that after a bad start in January, the situation began to improve and on April 9 deaths were 40 below those for the same period of 1970. “However,” he continued, “the situation quickly worsened and by May 14 we were five deaths above 1970’s score.”
Monthly tolls for the first half of 1970 were January, 84; February, 103; March, 89; April, 86; May, 100, and June, 100. For 1971, they were January, 92; February, 86; March, 82; April, 95; May, 102, and June, 84. Deaths of pedestrians were down from 113 to 96 and those of servicemen from 36 to 34.
