The August meeting of the Shiloh Association of Baptist

The August meeting of the Shiloh Association of Baptist churches was held last Wednesday in Amissville with the local church acting as host. Nearly 200 adults and a number of resident children representing 30 member churches, met in the first of two fall allday meetings. Moderator Gordon George conducted both sessions, Introducing speakers from the Richmond Baptist Board and from area churches, who brought messages on stewardship and the challenge of church membership. Rain was providencially withheld to permit the gathering to enjoy the elaborate array of luncheon delicacies provided by the Amissville ladies and served in the shade of a large maple tree. To young eyes the occasion was brand new, but to those who could look back yonder, little of importance had changed in a generation, or even a century. The excitement was evident and the bustle of each arrival was there; the tender greeting as friend recognized friend was all the same. Perhaps the family dinner, no longer was tucked in an oak splint market basket and of course the bright tin lard pail that carried Junior’s fried chicken was missing, but nevertheless, it was the good old days of reunion again. To be sure, the wheels turned faster and the thank you ma’ams were gone from the dirt roads and folk rode high over the branch nstead of taking the ford, but the look and the sounds were generations old.
