Horse Owners Take Note You have all heard of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis (V.E.E. for short). It is a very serious disease of the horse family. It is also called sleeping sickness. However, this Venezuelan type of Encephalomyelitis is much worse than the eastern and western type that has been in the United States for a good many years. This Venezuelan type will kill 80 to 90 percent of the animals that get it. Death will occur in 6 to 8 days after the symptoms appear. V.E.E. has been in Central and South America since 1936 but was not diagnosed in the U.S. until July 1971 when it was found in Texas. In the space of one month over 1,000 animals died from it. The U.S.D.A. with the help of the state ' department of agriculture and the U.S. Department of Defense have initiated a massive vaccination program in the southern tier of states from Florida to Texas in an effort to keep the disease from spreading to other states.
