children explored the school in which they will spend so much time. They learned how to go through the cafeteria line; how to ride the school bus; what to do in case of fire; how to play in the gymnasium; and how to find their way around the building. This limited period of orientation enables the children to become familiar with his environment in a relaxed atmosphere so that there is little fear they can come in the fall at which time all 800 elementary students descend on Rappahannock County Elementary School. The last aspect of the pre-school program blends in and intermingles with the other objectives. This is readiness. Every attempt was made to provide the children with as many different experiences as possible to help them “be ready for school.” The children worked with colors, numbers, letters and discrimination concepts.
