A clarification
ORDINARILY, it’s playing unfair for an editorial to be devoted to replying to a Letter to the Editor, but since the accusation of unfairness has been raised against this newspaper, in the way it reported an item of business which came before the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors, a reply seems in order.
There are several points in the communication which indicate the reader missed, rather spectacularly, not only the letter but the spirit of the report. But for that only the writer can accept blame; if the report failed to communicate, then it was surely a failing of the skill of the writer himself.
But we do take strong exception to the charge that mockery of the people involved was intended.
For a reporter to try to the best of his ability to capture the special flavor of a speech pattern, as well as to give an accurate account of the proceedings (and the account was accurate, a point which does not seem to be disputed), is not
