SEPARATE BULLS FROM HEIFER CALVES — Martin Strate, Executive Director of the Virginia Beef Cattle Association, reports a large number of bred heifers showing up in feed lots on his annual buyer visits. The majority of these heifers are getting pregnant 30 to 60 days before sale season. Regardless of where we sell our calves, we need to improve our reputation and keep our buyers. Consigning only open heifers sure will help.
Either pen bulls away from cow herd or divide the cow herd into separate groups. That is, run cows with heifer calves in one field and cows with steer calves in another. Run bulls with the cowsteer calf herd.
