The national apple crop is expected to top six billion pounds, (6.2). This compares with 6.1 in 1971 and 6.3 from 1970. Washington state continues to lead the U.S. in production followed by New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and California. Of the six leading states, Washington, New York and California expect a greater yield than last year, while a decline is foreseen for Pennsylvania and Virginia and no change is anticipated in Michigan.
