STOCKPILING FESCUE FOR WINTER GRAZING — If you are planning on winter grazing stock piled fescue, the end of July and the first of August is the critical time in your fescue management program. Be certain to graze, clip or some how get the fescue down to 3-4” by the first week in August. Overgrazing slows recovery growth while undergrazing allows low quality growth to carry over into winter. Top dress with 60-100 pounds of Nitrogen per acre as soon as cows are removed (the first week in August). This is also a good time to apply P2 05, K2 O and lime as needed according to soil tests. Do not permit pH to fall below 6.0. Of course, you will want to keep all livestock off this pasture until all other fall growth is grazed off.
