On dog debates
A POLITICIAN IN Fauquier County .says that when he first went to the General Assembly as a freshman Delegate, he received some of the best advice he’s ever received. An older, more experienced delegate from Southwest Virginia advised him: “Young man, there’s two things to steer clear of, and that’s any legislation concerning dogs or squirrels.”
We don’t know about squirrels (“tree rats,” the British call them, and shoot them on sight; it’s always “open season”), but we have observed that any legislation involving dogs can stir up a ruckus. Some members of Rappahannock County’s Board of Supervisors feel that the court house will be filled up for the October meeting, and a hearing on a proposal to double the amount of dog fees collected by the county. We wouldn’t be surprised if they’re right.
There’s only one point we’d like to emphasize — that everyone make a special effort to refrain from semantic niceties, and try to keep closely to the subject at hand. As far as we can tell — just to cite an example of what we mean — amendments to state enabling legislation have made Rappahannock’s controversial “surcharge” on German shepherds a moot point.
