In August Fisher traditionally writes to all physicians who were recently licensed by endorsement and examination, and to all doctors who are involved in approved internship! and residencies at Virginia hospitals. This always brings a fairly brisk amount of activity. However, the response has never begun to equal that of this year.
Of the 112 physicians who contacted the Council recently, 38 are U. S. trained and 74 are foreign trained. All have a Virginia license. Another element puzzeling to Mr. Fisher is the fact that 43 of the 74 foreigntrained physicians are from the Philippines. This high percentage of Filipinos has never been noted before.
ACCORDING to Fisher, unfortunately most of the doctors contacting the Council are specialists; only eight of the 112 are family physicians. The demand for the latter is still overwhelming with 192 opportunities for G.P.’s presently listed with the Council.
Also interesting to note is the fact that of the 112 physicians, 19 were surgeons, bringing to 91 the number of surgeons listed to meet a need reflected in
