“The switchover to the metric system has already begun in certain areas of private industry and in school systems in the United States,” Walker said. “But most important for us is the convenience we can provide for the rapidly increasing number of foreign visitors to this country and our national parks and historic areas. At the same time, by providing metric alongside standard measurements, the National Park Service can provide a useful educational method for school children and the public at large to think in metric terms.” •
