A LONG-standing personnel question that created some friction between Rappahannock Supervisors H. B. Wood and Chairman Newbill Miller at earlier meetings—whether to allow E.A. McNear to stay on as Zoning Administrator— was finally resolved in gentlemanly style.
When growth pressures expanded the duties of McNear’s office to the point where the Zoning Administrator wanted an assistant, Supervisors Wood and Miller split over whether to accept Col. McNear’s offer to continue his work as Zoning Administrator with the help of an assistant.
Wood was clearly in favor of hiring another man. His continuous prodding at an earlier meeting “to hire another man” eventually forced a constrained “you’re not polite” observation from Newbill Miller.
At last Thursday’s session of the Board of Supervisors, continued from the previous week, the matter of how to keep Col. E. A. McNear as Zoning Administrator without jeopardizing his retirement salary was finally resolved, with Supervisors Miller and. Wood making a great show of gentlemanly consideration.
H. B. WOOD stubbornly plunked for the hirihg of engineer F. M. Baumgardner to replace McNear, but admitted: “I can only vote; I can only give you my point of view.”
