Wood gave it one last try when he said: “Why can’t we let Mr. Baumgardner do the whole thing? Mr. McNear’s retired and got a 500-acre farm. He’s got enough to do withoug getting bored.”
The supervisors eventually voted 3-2 to hire Baumgardner to assist McNear for one day a week, with H.B. Wood and J.R. Latham opposed. Miller was joined in the vote by Herbert Foster and Pete Luke.
The outcome of the argument about the expanded duties of the Zoning Administrator’s office—with Baumgardner now acting as assistant zoning and subdivision administrator, and building and electrical inspector—is that the Board wants staff recommendations prepared prior to significant zoning decisions, and McNear’s presence at Board meetings.
“THE TIME has come,” said Col. Luke, “when we must have staff work so that we can make rational decisions.” Another result of the discussion of McNear’s duties is th&t the Board expects anyone who disagrees with the County’s delineation of “conservation” areas must furnish their own contours maps.
