Rappahannock races
THE RAPPAHANNOCK HUNT Point-to-Point races, scheduled for Saturday, March 1, are held in mountain country where traditions change slowly, families stay in the same place and last long. For that reason, their races are still closely related in spirit to the original hunter races in England and in this country. Those were tests of the individual foxhunter riding his favorite mount. One veteran foxhunter once said of the Rappahannock meet, “This is the greatest race meet in America. Nobody tells me whether I sit or stand. The whole show is as comfortable as an open shirt collar.” The meet is still a homey easy going show. It has a catch-as-catch can air; a bank holiday spirit. Nine races are scheduled, The first beginning at 11:30 a.m., March 2 at Thornton Hill Farm on Route 522 south of Sperryville. The Paris Race, turf races, hurdle races, climaxed by the hound race which is open to hound owners in Rappahannock Hunt territory, all provide a most picturesque ending to a very sporting afternoon. □
