AN INTERESTING SIDELIGHT on the Department’s high-handedness about 1-66 was provided last week at a “design hearing” on widening a road through Berryville. (Yes, the department is building a by-pass, but they want to widen the old road, too. How about that, road fans?) The Highwayman in charge of the Berryville meeting was challenged by one lady, when she was told that it would be “highly unusual” for the design to be changed after the hearing. “I thought the purpose of this hearing,” she said, “was for ya’ll to see your mistakes. I thought that’s what citizen input was supposed to help you do. Do you not make any mistakes?”
They make some whoppers, but try and get them to admit it.
At another point, the Highwayman said: “We are most influenced by the wishes of the governing bodies. This project will go through only if your town council wants it.” Really? Has the

NO WONDER PEOPLE ARE cynical about the Highway Department’s sincerity in its public hearing procedures.
No wonder people can say, as one man at Berryville did after last week’s “public input” exercise: “If you’re for it, sit back and relax. If you’re against it, sit back and accept.”D
