Col. Caperton
Col. James N. Caperton, 82, died February 13, 1974 at his home in Herndon. Born in Union, W. Va., he was graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1916. While there he played on the polo team and was an instructor in Equitation and Tacking. He coached the polo team from 1924 to 1929.
After graduation Col. Caperton served in the Mexican Border campaign and saw active duty in France during World War I. He was a graduate of Cavalry School in Ft. Riley, Kansas and the Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth.
During World War II he was assistant Professor of Military Science at VMI, then Commandant of the Cadet Corps at LeHigh University. He was the officer in charge of the funeral of the late President Woodrow Wilson.
At the time of his retirement in 1946 he was a member of the Secretary of War Review Board. Former resident of Amissville, he was a charter member of the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department and helped in the construction of the fire house.
He was survived by his wife Alma Thraves Caperton, a step-son William Vernon Thraves Justis, Sr., of Herndon, 3 grandsons and 2 nephews. Graveside services were held February 19 at National Cemetery in Arlington with full military honors.
