PERHAPS the Governor’s rationing plan comes just in time for Rappahannock, where the gasoline supply was almost completely depleted over the weekend. Signs on gas tanks in all parts of the county said the same thing— “No gas” or “out.”
At one station, as the tanker delivered gas as many as 40 vehicles stood in line waiting for their turn at the pump. At another, 4000 gallons of fuel were delivered at 10 in the morning and by 4 o’clock that afternoon, all was gone.
Many of Rappahannock’s residents commute to the metropolitan area to work. The car pool system has been in use over the years here as a means of economy.
In an area as rural as Rappahannock, one cannot travel far withoutgasoline. The county has only general stores and service stations and other needed items as drugs, clothing, etc. must be gotten from an adjoining area.
