MANWARING of Rappahannock was one of the speakers at the Northern Virginia Forage Conference held at Middleburg on March 14. ' The Woodville cattle farmer appeared on a panel with V.M. Dupont of Loudoun County, and Ed Gentry of Madison, to describe his experiences with what VPI Extension specialists, called “large hay packages.”
Manwaring, who uses a round baler with a cowcalf operation, said he’d had excellent results. Rappahannock cattle farming is entirely a matter of grass and hay, he said, so yearround grazing techniques are of special interest there. He supplements the big bale feeding with stands of Kentucky 31 fescue, about which he was also enthusiastic.
“We’re working toward having to feed hay only when snow covers the fescue,” said Manwaring.
