I BELIEVE IN the eternal goodness of God, but I know my human hands are too weak to hold onto iron c reeds. “Yet, in the maddening maze of things, And tossed by storm and flood, To one fixed trust my spirit clings; I know that God is Good. ” What better proof of God’s love than He permits us to work out our own salvation. Jesus mentioned the law of karma when He said we have to reap what we sow. What could we do that would merit eternal damnation for a few short years on this plane? So we come to a justification—reincarnations until the karmic debt is paid. If my belief in this doctrine were an isolated case I might question my rationale. “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” Free from what? Outworn creeds; the afterlife?
Holmes’ Chambered Nautilus is one of the answers to this question. “Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll. Leave thy low-vaulted past. Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life’ unresting sea.”D
