“THE INDUSTRY of agriculture, including forestry, provides a solid base for the current way of life in Virginia. This industry, employing workers in producing, processing and marketing of quality food and fiber, constitutes a major sector of Virginia’s economy. Its continued viability is dependent upon adequate land resources.” That’s the opening paragraph of a land use position paper adopted last week by the State Board of Agriculture and Commerce, and it sums up as forcefully as anything seen is quite sometime the attitude the Rappahannock News also has. We agree with the state board that preservation, protection and enhancement of this valuable asset is vital to all Virginians.
And yet, there are many Virginians who not only do not share this view, but are devoting all their waking hours—plus a few apparently spent buring the midnight oil—to devise more ways to transform Virginia farmland into something else, to sacrifice “a major sector of Virginia’s economy” into something else—something alien to Virginia and not all that promising.
