Pat’s bigger pieces, like quality reproductions anywhere, sell for several hundred dollars. “But handmade furniture is well made, and there are people to whom that’s important. They are willing to pay.”
THE BIGGS read area newspapers for sale listings. Pat tries to pick up his lumber at auction or by hearing, word-ofmouth, that someone has a barn full of old lumber that he’d like to get rid of.
Pat’s basement workshop is equipped with a joiner, router, a band saw, a radial arm saw, a mitre saw, latches and planes. Some of Pat’s tools belonged to his father, also a craftsman, and who first taught Pat about working with wood.
Each of the saws or big tools sits atop its own little cherry table, also made by Pat. The different bits and such are organized neatly in table drawers.
Each saw serves a particular function, Pat said, and each bit can change the type of edging or cutting done by the router.
Pat’s well-equipped shop has come in handy since the new house was started. Although a carpenter has done much of the construction and brick work, to get the house “under roof,” Pat plans to finish the inside and do the “decorative work” on the outside, such as pilasters on either side of the front door, dentals around the eaves, and wooden vents in the gables of the roof.
