Howard Holschuch demonstrated a small kit that RLEP members or anyone interested could order to test streams for the presence of several chemicals. A small amount of water taken from the stream is allowed to sit for several minutes after being treated with a special chemical. The pollution level can be determined by measuring the color of the water against the standard gradient in another small vial.
PETE LUKE described the work that has been done by the Sperryville Community Group to revise the recommendations an engineering firm made to the State Water Control Board about a sewage treatment facility for Sperryville.
The proposals were planned for an area with more population and greater growth potential, Luke said. “And they failed to note that the urban and regional solutions are not the best answer for a small town in a rural area. Luke noted that the State Water Control Board now acknowledged that a small town deserves a “unique solution,” partly because of the work of the Sperryville Community Group.
Captain Holschuch reminded RLEP members and their guests as the meeting adjourned, “We must remember, there are two things we want to make perfectly clear, our rivers and our streams.”—Pekay Pettus
