“This is probably one of the most difficult problems within the program,” Lorenz said. “It’s sometimes touchy. I can’t emphasize

enough how important it is to deal with this diplomatically. You can’t just run in and do your thing. That could really set the program back.”

“Most landowners are amenable to it, once it’s explained,” Lorenz said.

“WOULD A local organization that adopted a stream have to affiliate with the Izaak Walton League?” Phil Irwin asked.

“There are no strings attached,” Lorenz said. “We’re not pressing for members, we’re trying to get as many streams as possible cleaned up. “But we’ll help refer you to the right people or agencies, to help you with your work.”

“Streams have been viewed too long as discharge pipes,” he said. “By improving one stream that empties into a tributary to the Potomac, we’re improving, just a bit, the quality of the Chesapeake Bay.
