BEFORE GENERAL Noce had made his presentation “on education,” Pete Luke briefed the Supervisors on what had happened between him and the school board.
“I passed on to you copies of the letter they’d given me,” Luke said, referring to the letter from the school board to the State Board of Education about the kindergarten program. At their July meeting, the Supervisors expressed dismay that the school board had not been any stronger in stating their reservations about the program in that letter.
“Well, it turns out that they hadn’t sent me a true copy,” Luke said. The wording in the letter sent to the state read “accepted” instead of “approved” and that was qualified with “Should funding be available and public support continue,” Luke said.
He added that the school board had appointed Mrs. Massie and Mr. Montague to look into alternatives to a kindergarten. The school board will also send a letter to the state board of education, asking them to reconsider the requirement that all school systems must have kindergartens.
