But we just patched up the ewes and saved them,” he said. ‘‘But you’re not going to have much trouble if you’re keeping them in with cows with calves.” (Like most sheep farmers around here, he pronounced ewe as “Yo.”)
What old time sheep farmers remember vividly were cold winter nights of midwifing, since the
lambing season ran from late December until March.
‘‘But now you’ve got a market for the lambs 12 months out of the

The Lee brothers’ sheep are divided into two flocks. One is up in Harris Hollow, the other at their main farm on Fodderstack Road, “We hardly look in on the ones up in th“ hollow all summer, just often enough to see if they need drenching. But in the winter we check ‘em pretty close. After it comes snowing we get them up in the shed. But they don’t do well crowded up. The lambs lying down get stepped on. That’s one good thing about the summer lambing season. They’ve got more space.”
THE WINTER lambing season is a hectic time for the sheep farmer. “When it’s cold you’ve got to get the lambs up, soon after they’re born or they’ve gone!” Lee said. Summer brings its problems, too.
