“J’ve found that you just let them run with the cattle, they’ll do better. Some sheep will eat the grass the cows won’t and they’ll always eat the onions first in the spring. So you won’t get much onion in your milk.
“And the dogs don’t give you as much trouble, especially if you keep the sheep in with cows and the calves. If they’ve got calves, they won’t let the dogs get close. And the sheep will hang around where the cattle’s at, no matter how big the pasture is, so the dogs stay away from them, too.” Dogs killing sheep has been a controversial topic in Rappahannock for the past year, and the way to distinguish a “dog kill” from a “bear kill” had consumed part of several Supervisors’ meetings. There were so many dog fund claims last year that the fund was depleted before the year ended.
