WELL, these are versions of “progress” that have quite a few advocates, not only in Virginia but throughout the United States. From what we read, the lure of this peculiar vision is almost world-wide.
No thanks. Because we reject this idea of “progress,” this newspaper has been occasionally criticized for being “negative,” for being reactionary. But who’s being negative about the Northern Piedmont— someone who wants to see its beauty preserved and enhanced, the opportunities offered by small town, rural life widened and improved? Or someone who wants to see it transformed into a landscape of highways and cloverleafs, industrial parks and apartment-house complexes, sewage plants and garbage heaps, the very air transformed into a socio-chemical soup of automobile emissions, dust, and noise?
