NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

Notice' is hereby given to the public that the State Corporation Commission is investigating a proposal to increase the local coin rate for pay-station telephone service and a proposal to establish a schedule of charges for cafis to Directory Assistance Service. The proposals are to increase the local coin rate for paystations from 10<! to 20C and to charge 20C for calls to Directory Assistance Service in excess of three calls a month except for calls from coin telephones, hospitals, hotels, motels, and from handicapped customers who are unable to use a telephone company directory. The proposed charges were first filed by The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia, however, because of the interest in the proposals indicated by other telephone companies, and because of the statewide nature of these services, the Commission has expanded its investigation of such proposed charges to include all telephone companies operating in the State.

A public hearing on the proposed rate changes has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m., April 10, 1975, in the Commission’s Courtroom, Blanton Building, Richmond, Virginia. Each telephone company has been directed to file with the Commission’s Division of Public Utilities, on or before April 1, 1975, a written statement regarding the proposed rate changes including information regarding, among other things, the need for such changes, the cost of making the changes, and the additional annual revenue from such changes. The Division of Public Utilities will summarize and tabulate the information received from the companies and present a report at the time of hearing on April 10, 1975. The Commission will determine, after review of the Company’s reports, what further investigation, if any, is needed, and schedule any additional procedural and hearing dates that may be required.

Any person who expects to submit evidence, cross examine witnesses, and participate in the hearing as a protestant as provided in Rule 4:6 of the Commission’s Rules of Practice and Procedure shall file a Notice of Protest as provided by Rule 5:16 (c). Any interested person who desires to attend the hearing as an intervener, or general public witness (not as a protestant) need only appear in the Commission’s Courtroom at 9:45 a.m. on April 10, 1975, complete a notice-of-appearance form to be provided by the Commission’s Bailiff, and they will be given an opportunity to speak.
