citizens must be ever vigilant for the schemes of “growth” and “change” and “progress” which contain elements for transforming what is now a beautiful, gracious and satisfying way of life into something patched with parking lots and quarter acre lots, stitched together by hideous powerlines.
TO GUARD against these things, citizens must make sure not only that their local officials are fully cognizant of the heritage that has been entrusted to their care, but that their representatives in Richmond are equally keen to what the people want, as opposed to corporations and paving machine manufacturers. Unfortunately, more often our legislators hear only from the corporations and the paving machine people, and get distressed messages from the folks back home only when it is too late.
It will be nice if the continuing optimism of some of the powerline opponents is borne out by events. But if not, let us not despair to the point of giving up all such fights. Let’s make sure something like it doesn’t ever happen again.□
